Music Monday #2 - Music of the Night

Music is a huge part of my life, and so even though Ramblings of a Daydreamer is technically a book blog, I wanted to dedicate Mondays to music.
If you'd like to join me, grab the graphic and let's talk music on Mondays! Talk about anything music related you want -spotlight a band or singer, a specific song, album, video, soundtrack, a concert you went to, old music, new music, obscure music, whatever you want. Tell us what song is inspiring you this week, or what you've listened to while reading or writing. Make a soundtrack for a favourite book, or tell us a song you associate with a certain character. Share your post in the linky below and then be sure to visit other blogs!

I've mentioned this on the blog before, but I've been obsessed with Phantom of the Opera for years. When I was little, it was a huge thing in Toronto, which is just two hours away, but I never got to go. My parents had the soundtrack and I loved listening to it. When the movie came out a few years ago, I desperately wanted to see it but had no one to see it with so I kind of forgot about it. I finally saw it at the library one day about two years ago and finally got to see it. It was amazing. It quickly became one of my favourite movies, and I've borrowed the library's copy so many times (I have it right now, in fact), that I'm surprised I haven't worn it out. I rarely watch the entire thing anymore, I usually just skip around to my favourite scenes lol.

Anyway...I have several favourite songs from Phantom. I love the theme song - it always gives me chills whenever I hear those powerful opening organ notes. The Music of the Night is another favourite, as is All I Ask of You. In the next week or two I'm publishing a book of erotic short stories that I wrote quite awhile ago, and the first story is called 'Masquerade' and the guy is dressed as the Phantom, so...I guess that adds to my current obsession and why these songs are on my mind.

I've always been obsessed with masks and masquerade balls

"Slowly, gently night unfurls its splendor
Grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender
Turn your face away from the garish light of day
Turn your thoughts away from cold unfeeling light
And listen to the music of the night
Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
And you live as you've never lived before"

~Music of the Night - Phantom of the Opera~

This song is so beautiful. The lyrics are so vivid and sensual. When I was listening to it earlier, I thought how it could be applied to writing, and even to the muse. Lines like "Darkness stirs and wakes imagination, Silently the senses abandon their defenses" and "Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams" and "Let your mind start a journey to a strange new world" and "Let your soul take you where you long to be". If you're a writer, can't you see how those lines would apply? I can close my eyes and imagine the muse singing or whispering these words to me, seductive and elusive and all-consuming.

If you know me at all, you'll know that I'm obsessed with U2. They're my favourite band, I work them into a conversation whenever possible, and since I can't in good conscience talk music without talking about them, I decided to add a feature at the end of every Music Monday post with a U2 lyric.

This week's is short and sweet...keeping with the theme of 'songs about songs/music' ;-)

"You're looking for the one
But you know you're somewhere else instead
You want to be the song
Be the song that you hear in your head"

~Discotheque - U2~

  1. I totally hear you about Phantom of the Opera. My baby brother got to go and see it with his 8th grade class and I couldn't attend as an aid for the teachers because I was away at university. Gah!

I haven't seen the movie. I should fix that.

I totally agree with you about the theme and Music of the Night. That song makes me think of Zakariah a lot. He doesn't need a mask like the phantom, but he is misunderstood, lonely and wants to be loved.

Anyway, I totally love this feature and I linked up a post. Also, the cover for your erotic romances is very pretty. Awesome work. :)

  3. I really need to watch this movie again. I have only watched it twice, and that was right after it came out on DVD. You're right about the lyrics! Hmm... reading all about this makes me want to watch it again. ^_^

It took me a little bit to put one of these together, but here's mine for the week:
